The time has come to feast our eyes on the beauty of God Himself. Today, I would like you to simply consider one question. I will pose the question below. First however, let’s do a quick summary of what we have already seen in these meditations.
We have considered the fact that this psalm is saturated with the theme of beauty. That beauty has an arresting power that changes the life of the person who sees it through the eyes of faith. I have a lot to contribute on the beauty of God and find this to be a gripping topic. Please follow me into a wonderful discovery of the beauty of God.
In order for us to discover the essence of beauty, so that we can welcome true beauty when we see it, let us answer the question, “What is the essence of true beauty?” What is it about God that makes Him so beautiful? What is it about one object that makes it beautiful and another that makes it ugly? Why is it that one man can see beauty only in a woman with a beautiful figure, while another sees unparalleled beauty in his dear old wife, asleep on her deathbed? What is it about beauty that attracts the person who sees it? What is the essence of beauty and why is it so powerful?
We have opened a serious question. Because it takes time for us to get through an issue using blogs like this, I urge you to spend some time thinking about these questions to come up with some personal conclusions. Meditate on this Psalm (Psalm 16) and find some serious clues. This Psalm holds forward some wonderful jewels of thought on the questions we have raised above. What does this Psalm say about God that make Him so attractive?
Before I conclude this morning, I would like to issue a word of warning. I have spent considerable time on this issue in agony before the Lord. My conclusions have developed over time as I have wrestled with the attraction of sin in my life. These conclusions are the fruit of earnest spiritual labour.
Because of that, and because of the delicate nature of the issues I will discuss from here on, I am very likely to be misunderstood. There may be people who will find some of the things I am saying offensive. Please give me the benefit of the doubt and hear what I am saying rather than stretching my words to make them say what you think I am saying. I write as a man, who like men, come into serious temptation to sin through what they see with their eyes. Although women may not be as tempted in that same way, I believe that my lady readers will find my conclusions on the beauty of God most satisfying.
Having issued that warning, we may begin to consider the beauty of God.
