A COVENANT LACKING NOTHING

“Although my house be not so with God; yet He hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: …” (II Samuel 23:5). These were, in part, the last words of David. David knew by doctrine and had learned by experience that parents cannot give grace to their children. We read nowhere of a more graceless brood of offspring than the children of David. David ate the bitter herbs of family affliction like no other father we read of. Not only was David’s house full of trials, his life was full of trouble; from the very beginning of his recorded biography there was the envy by his brethren, to the uncaused persecution of Saul. There were trials not only in his pre-kingdom life, but also trials during his successful reign. There were trials from those who served him, such as Joab and Ahithophel; and his beloved son Absalom, rising up against him, winning the hearts of the people and leading them in rebellion, driving the old king from his throne.
David is yet resigned to these things, convinced that they too, ever how bitter, were “ordered” by the covenant. David’s words serve as the divine cordial of the Old Testament, as Paul’s in Romans 8:28 does for the New Testament, “and we know that all things work together for good to those who love God.”
Barnard Gilpin, one of the reformers, was famous for never murmuring or complaining; whatever was his lot. In the worst of times he would say, “It is all of God’s everlasting covenant, and must be good.” Toward the end of Queen Mary’s reign he was summoned to be tried for heresy, and probably like Ridley and Latimer before him, to be burned at the stake. The old reformer quietly submitted to the summons and said to his weeping friends, “It is in the covenant and must be for good.”
On his journey from Durham to London to face his accusers his horse fell and the “accident” left Gilpin with a broken leg, leaving him laid up at a roadside inn. Again he was asked, “What do you think of this?” Again he replied, “It is all in the covenant, and must be for good.” Many weeks passed before his leg was healed and he was able to continue his journey. During the process of time Queen Mary died, the persecutions were stopped and the old reformer returned to Durham rejoicing to his friends; “Did not I tell you,” he said, “that all was working together for good.”
Oh for a peaceful resolve that we might with David in Psalms 31:15, rest in the divine fact that “my times are in your hands.”
