No Peace Without This Piece - Dr. James A. Scudder

Today’s Scripture: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

A wealthy woman didn’t care for the man her daughter married. Her family was rich, and everybody knew it. She expected her daughter to marry someone from the same social class but was disappointed when her daughter married a blue-collar gas station attendant.

With all of her wealth and status, the only real treasure she had in her life was her daughter. Nothing else mattered. When she had to give her daughter away to her new son-in-law, she simply couldn’t take it. The object of her peace was gone, and anxiety quickly took over.

The woman decided to take matters into her own hands. So she hired a hit man to frame her son-in-law. Unfortunately for her, the assassin turned out to be an undercover police officer.

True peace is not merely the absence of activity or hostility. It’s not found in getting away from reality. Peace must begin within our hearts. It comes when the most important person in our lives is Jesus Christ. If He is our treasure, though everything else falls to pieces, His peace will remain.

We may struggle with anxiety now that a loved one has left. A son or daughter has gotten married, a spouse has filed for divorce, a mother or father has died, or a good friend has moved out of state. In our loss, we need to think about who or what the object of our peace is. We must make sure that Object is Christ, and no circumstance will shake us.

Devotional by Dr. James A. Scudder Jr.
