The Wobbly Woodpile - Pastor Neal Dearyan
SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2017

Today’s Scripture: If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. 1 Corinthians 12:17‑18

I grew up in the country. I learned that country boys know how to stack a stable woodpile.

Earlier today I stacked a bunch of firewood for an older friend in the community. The pieces of wood were scrap from a sawmill with irregular shapes and sizes. Some were short. Some were long. Some were curved. He wanted the wood stacked on his porch up to chest-high. It was like playing Tetris to get each piece in a spot where it would make the woodpile more stable. Put a couple pieces in the wrong spot and the pile would fall over.

As I stacked, I realized that each piece of wood was like a person in the local and universal church. Each one needs to be placed in the right spot in the body of Christ so they can make it stronger. Each person has different strengths. Every member is unique. Not every person is created by God to do the same thing. He has gifted us in special ways.

Can you run a vacuum? Are you gifted with music? Do you like to teach? God has a spot just for you. Are you more gifted than the spot where you’re currently serving? If so, stay faithful doing what you’re doing and it will become obvious that you can do other things too. But what if you say, “I’m tired of not being recognized as more gifted.” As a result of this thinking, you quit your job in the body of the church.

What happens then? The woodpile gets wobbly and might fall over.

Every piece has a place. As I stacked, I sometimes moved a piece because I realized it was better suited for another spot. God has gifted every believer (1 Corinthians 12:11). As you are faithful in one spot, He may move you to another. But may I suggest you wait for Him to move you? The problem with pieces moving themselves is this makes the woodpile wobbly. And if enough pieces do it, the whole thing falls over.

We need to trust God enough to allow Him to put us where He wants us. He wants His church to be solid. Let Him move you if He wants to. Be just as happy if He doesn’t. Why? Because it’s all about Him, He has you where you are for a good reason. Be patient. Work hard. Do a good job where you are. Believe me, God will notice. He’ll use you in the best spot. Be thankful God is using you right where you are.
