HELP FOR SEEKERS OF CHRIST

Most people have no concern for their souls. We can pray for them and with impassioned pleas we can beg them to turn from their ungodly ways, but even after many years, they remain unmoved. As hard a pill as it is to swallow, it is true nonetheless, that many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew 20:16; & 22:14).
But there are someâ€”a â€œlittle flockâ€ (Luke 12:32), a â€œremnantâ€ (Rom.9:27; 11:5), who are earnestly seeking the peace of God. They have implored the Lord to save them, yet they find no rest. They have â€œcomeâ€ to Christ the only way they know, but they continue to tremble in fear and despair. They are afraid to claim Christ as their Lord and Savior for fear of making a false profession. They are afraid of talking themselves into a salvation that is not theirs. They have wrestled with despair amid frustration and have fainted on the threshold of faith only to resume their search for the peace that â€œpasseth all understandingâ€â€”yet only to faint again.
The only way one can be saved and have that peace is by faith; letâ€™s give attention to the object of faith. If one says, â€œI cannot believeâ€ what then? What is his wisest course? Suppose you find a difficulty in believing a reportâ€”what do you do; you consider the probabilities of it. Suppose it had been rumored that the President had shot himself. Am I to believe the report? He would ask first from where the rumor comes, and what confirms it, from what authority is it stated, and soon he would hope to arrive at a conclusion whether it is true or false.
Now if we earnestly desire to believe that faith is the gift of God and a work of the Spirit, and that God works according to the laws of the mind, faith in Christ will most readily come to us in conformity with those laws. â€œFaith cometh by hearing,â€ how by hearing does faith come? By hearing I learn the truth concerning Christ and what I hear commends itself to my judgment and understanding, and so I come to believe. Faith comes to us also by reading, which is another form of hearing. Read what the Scripture has to say about Christ and His atoning work, and you will be brought to believe Godâ€™s testimony by knowing what it is, and on what authority it comes to you. Let your hearing and your reading be accompanied with mediation, like the Virgin Mary, â€œponder these things in your heart.â€ â€œIncline your ear,â€ says the Spirit, â€œand come to Me; hear, and your soul shall live.â€
