Stand Up - Jim Scudder Jr.

Today’s Scripture: And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. Acts 10:25‑26

Peter had just seen a vision where God told him not to call the things which God has cleansed “unclean.” This vision didn’t just give Peter permission to eat bacon, but it also prepared him to share the gospel to the gentiles.

Just before this vision, God sent an angel to Cornelius, a gentile. The angel told Cornelius to send some men to find Peter and bring Peter with them to Cornelius. When Peter’s vision was finishing, those men came to the house that he was staying at.

Peter went with the men, and as soon as Cornelius saw Peter, he met him and worshiped him. Peter immediately stopped him. Only God is worthy to receive worship.

A lot of Christians want to be a celebrity instead of a servant. There are a lot of Christians that would welcome this kind of attention and praise, but Peter said, “No! Stand up. I’m just a man.” He was “clothed with humility.” (1 Peter 5:5)

Peter knew that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Peter may have been tempted to welcome the worship and admiration of Cornelius, but he resisted that and did not promote himself. He did not accept the honor but gave the honor to God.

How about you? When God works through you to accomplish His will, do you take the credit? Do you wish that more people would recognize your role, or do you reserve all the praise to God?
