Never Too Far – Jim Scudder Jr.

Today’s Scripture: And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. Luke 15:20

A singing group consisting of Dayspring graduates, “Evidence of Grace,” travels around the country representing Dayspring Bible College. They have recently made a new CD. One of the songs on that album, “Too Far Away,” is a great reminder of God’s grace. The lyrics go as follows.

Curiosity took you away
Circumstances left you longer
Than you ever planned to stay.
It’s been so long since you left this familiar place.
You wonder would he even recognize your face.
If you listen you can hear a call from grace.

You’re never too far away that God can’t hear your cry.
He knows where you have run and all the reasons why.
Don’t ever think you’ve gone too far beyond
What love and grace can do.
You can never get too far away from God
For God will never get too far away from you.

This song reminds me of the parable of the prodigal son. The son thought he was too far away. The best he hoped for was that he could return to his father and become his servant. He nervously traveled home and when he was “yet a great way off,” his father ran to him! The father had been watching for his return since the day he left. Not only was he thrilled to see his son return, but the Bible says he ran to his son!

Imagine the scene. The father was wearing the clothing typical in Israel at that time. He would have had to grab the bottom of his robe and pull it above his knees to run. Running caused the father to humble himself and show his limitless love.

God loves you perfectly! Jesus humbled Himself and became a man to show His limitless love. If He was willing to come and die in our place, then He is willing to forgive us of our sins today. You are never too far away from God!
