FELLOWSHIP
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you,
that ye also may have fellowship with us:
and truly our fellowship is with the Father,
and with His Son Jesus Christ.
I John 1:3

What is the fellowship of believers? Paul gives an important key in Ephesians 4:3-6. He speaks of our â€œkeeping the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.â€ He then explains it by stating the community of believers in Christ is â€œOne body, and one Spirit, one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.â€ Therefore believers are one in Christ and form a distinct community.
Believers have a community nature; all are â€œpartakers of the divine natureâ€ (II Peter 1:4).
Believers share in a community of views, â€œWhosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Sonâ€ (II John 9).
Believers have a community of affections, loving Christ; they love one another, â€œEvery one that loveth Him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of Himâ€ (I John 5:1).
Believers have a community of successes and disappointments (joy and sorrows), If â€œone member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with itâ€ (I Corinthians 12:26).
Believers form a community of benevolence (dependence on one another), â€œâ€¦The eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of theeâ€ (I Corinthians 12:21).
Believers form a distinct society in the progress of the true faith, â€œBeloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once (and for all) delivered unto the saintsâ€ (Jude 3).
Believers have a mutual fellowship in the prospects of heaven and to eternity, â€œBut ye are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the Mediator of the New Covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abelâ€ (Hebrews 12:22-24).
