“For the LORD your God is God of gods, and LORD of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:” Deuteronomy 10:7
At least five times in the Scriptures we read that there is no favoritism with God (Deuteronomy 10:7, Acts 10:34, Romans 2:11, Galatians 2:6, Ephesians 6:9).Is it not vital then that we understand this one characteristic of God if we are to know Him in Truth? What does it mean that God is no respecter of persons?
1.He never plays favorites and never takes a bribe, Deuteronomy 10:7: The picture of lady justice with a blindfold and scales in her hand symbolizes true justice. Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted wearing a blindfold. The blindfold represents objectivity, in that justice is or should be meted out objectively, without fear or favor, regardless of identity, money, power, or weakness; blind justice and impartiality. How true of God, Who cannot, nor does He ever, set aside justice to show mercy (Numbers 14:18). Justice must be satisfied and that never could be by the gifts or works (bribes) of guilty condemned sinners (Galatians 2:16). That is why the LORD Jesus was sent of His Father into the world, to satisfy His Law and Justice on behalf of guilty sinners, that God the Father might be Just and justify those He gave to His Son from eternity, and for whom the LORD Jesus paid their entire sin debt (Romans 3:19-26).
2.Race, color, social status, rich or poor are of no importance to God when it comes to saving sinners, Acts 10:34: When the LORD sent Peter to preach to Cornelius the Centurion, initially he resisted because he, being a Jew, was not accustomed to speaking with a Gentile, or vice versa (Acts 10:28). Let us beware of thinking that somehow our race, culture, or social standing is a sign of God’s blessing because of these things; “For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” (I Corinthians 4:7) Acceptance with God cannot be obtained on any other ground than that of the Covenant of Mercies of God in Christ, and His shed blood and righteousness accomplished and imputed at the cross, (Romans 5:9-11). The effect of God’s Grace and justice satisfied in Christ is that there are a people from every tribe, nation, and tongue, redeemed unto God by Jesus Christ the Lamb, Revelation 5:9.
3. There is no partiality with God, Romans 2:11: There are many today who believe that God is partial to the Jewish nation, and that by supporting and identifying with the Jews, God is somehow blessing them as a nation. While it is true that the LORD did set apart the Jewish nation, and promised to protect and keep them, the blessing was to bring His own Son from that nation, and from HIM, all the nations of the earth are blessed; (Genesis 22:18, Galatians 3:16). So complete is the work of the LORD Jesus on behalf of all of the elect from every tribe, nation, and tongue, that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus,” (Galatians 2:28).
4. There is no one God esteems other than His Son, and those who are heirs by His electing grace, Galatians 2:16: The meaning here is that even if the elder Apostles had “seen with their eyes,” and “looked upon and handled the Word of Life” (1John 1:1), God does not regard them with any more favor than those to whom they ministered. All who are the LORD’s are accepted in and because of Christ alone.
