Revealing Glory to Blind Eyes
Jesus has spoken, in chapter 9, about his impending death, yet his mission continues. He has proven Himself to be the Messiah, yet rather than being received with joy, He is greeted with increasing hostility. So much so that Jesus warns His disciples that He is sending them out like sheep among wolves. Yet, just as death cannot hinder the mission of Christ, neither wolves, nor snakes, nor scorpions will be able to hinder His disciples from accomplishing the mission on which He has sent them. The disciples are ecstatic when they return from the mission upon which Jesus had sent them, because to their astonishment, even the demons had submitted to them. They are convinced that they are seeing the kingdom being inaugurated before their eyes and at their hands. Yet Jesus has seen greater manifestations of spiritual power than this. The pinnacle of spiritual power is what He wants them to appreciate--God writing the name of a rebel in heaven, and then saving that rebel from his rebellion. Until then, the world constitutes the blind eyes to which God has revealed His glory through Jesus. The astounding miracle is not the submission of a demon or God's protection, according to His will, from a snake or scorpion, it is the blind coming to see the glory of God in the face of Christ.
