The Effectual Word of God
Isaiah 55:8-13
God’s Word is Christ (John 1:1). Everything that the Father says to us as sinners He has said through His Son, the LORD Jesus (Hebrews 1:1-3).All of God’s wisdom is treasured in Christ Jesus, and in, by and through HIM He has ordained all things to His glory (Romans 11:36).
God’s Word declares Him to be infinite:
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Everything we need to know of God, judgment or salvation, He has revealed in His written inspired Word. It is the record that He has given of His Son, the Word made flesh. Yet, He is infinitely above what any of us could imagine, because He is infinite God. The secret things of His eternal decretive will (all that He has purposed from eternity),, belong unto Him. What He has revealed unto us is for us and our children, and most certainly to be believed, because it is God who has decreed them and reveals them through His Son as He will (Matthew 11:27).
God’s Word is the source of ALL life, physical and spiritual:
10 “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: This verse includes nearly every element involved with sowing and reaping. Just as the “rain” and the “dew” are from God alone, so the gracious influences of the Spirit of Christ are what prepare the heart to receive the “seed” Who is Christ Jesus, the Divine Word. The “sower” is the Servant of the LORD, that is Christ the Son of Man (Matthew 13:37). The “bread” ‘Christ the Living Bread,’ is the Gift of God to those sinners He came to save, and ALL their sustenance both now and forever.
God’s Word cannot be changed or annulled:
“11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:” It shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” “All the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen,”(2 Cor. 1:20).All of the promises, pictures, and prophecies set forth in Scripture concerning Christ were fulfilled in Him. He did not fail in one instant what He, the Incarnate Word, came to accomplish. He is the successful Savior, and by His finished work at Calvary has effectually reconciled and justified those the Father gave Him from eternity. His Word (Christ) has prospered for the salvation of His people. Everything was fulfilled in, by and through the Word expressed, Christ (Hebrews 1:3).
God’s Word saves His elect and leads them forth in peace:
“12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Although prophetic of the return from captivity of Israel in Babylon, it clearly typifies the deliverance of God’s Spiritual Israel (chosen sinners in Christ) out of their bondage of sin. When the Spirit draws them, they come out with joy and peace, their sin having been paid in full.
God’s Word is forever:
13” Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” Briars and thorns represent the sin and wickedness of false religion that pervades in the world. And yet, from such a wicked world, God has raised up an everlasting Savior, and a Seed unto His glory and honor forever. “It shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off”. These are sinners are compared to fir and myrtle trees, and called by the name of the LORD, bearing His name, for His praise, and the glory of His grace, who has done such great and wonderful things for them. The everlasting sign is His righteousness whereby such are justified by His death once for all, forever.
