Barnabas' Exhortation

Thought From the Word

Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.” Acts 11:23

This passage relates the account of Barnabas exhorting a group of new believers in Antioch. This fledgling church would eventually become a hub for the spread of the gospel thru men like Barnabas and Paul. What was his message to them, after travelling all the way from Jerusalem? Cleave unto—remain with, persevere in—the Lord!

The fresh excitement of new love for Jesus Christ is sometimes dulled by the daily reality of the struggle that it is to stay close to Him. After all, it is hard to deny our sinful nature day in and day out. Furthermore, there are a thousand things that compete for our affection and attention. Distractions and seductions abound that Satan loves to use to draw our hearts away from the Lord.

Therefore, Barnabas exhorted these fresh converts to purposefully stay close to Christ. A good exhortation! Do you need to hear that today? Feeding your soul with Scripture, fighting your sin nature and serving faithfully in the church won't happen by accident. With dependence on God's grace, purpose in your heart to cleave to Christ. Can you think of any specific things you need to do to make this happen?
