Two Amazing Things

1) The goodness and value that sometimes come from those who do not believe God. I have often been the recipient of acts of kindness from unbelievers. I have even been taught some valuable spiritual lessons and some points of good theology from those who would be deeply offended by the gospel I preach.

2) The wickedness and harm that sometimes come from those who do believe God. I do not have to look far to see this, for it is proven in my own self. I am appalled at myself, wondering how a man such as I could actually know God. I have both told and heard lies from believers. I have both hurt and been hurt by believers. I have seen some of the most hateful things done by believers to one another.

But, one idea explains them both: the grace of God. On the one hand, we see the marvelous power of the common grace of God in unbelievers to overrule their inborn nature to make them a positive force in the world. A bad tree cannot bear good fruit – unless God overrules to make it happen! And he often does.

And the marvelous grace of God is able to forgive and sustain his people despite their many faults, weaknesses and failures. “Where sin did abound, grace did much more abound.” So, by that gracious arithmetic, let our amazement at our capacity for sin be overwhelmed by our amazement over God’s capacity to forgive. Such thinking will never lead us to greater sin, but will work in us greater love for the Lord against whom we sin, which will in turn, restrain us from so great abuses of his grace.
