I. Exhortation
Dan 4:34 "And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: 35And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?"
A. God’s work is always done in the middle of the greatest empires on earth. B. God manifests his sovereignty right in the center of every one of Greatest Empires in the History of the World. - Egyptian Empire - Joseph and Moses - Babylonian Empire - Nebuchadnezzar put out to pasture - Dan. 4:34-36 - Roman Empire - Jesus is put to death by their wicked hands, but“by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of a sovereign God.”
C. This nation was built on an assumption of God’s absolute sovereignty - Reforemers, Pilgrims, Puritans, Scottish Presbyterians, George Whitfield, and Jonathan Edwards, Patrick Henry and George Washington, etc.
D. The modern compromise on the doctrine. Pelagianism, Socinianism, or Open Theism have pretty much dominated the church since 1776.
E. Why is the sovereignty of God so important?
If God is not sovereign… inevitably… the state becomes sovereign or attempts to become sovereign.
If God is not sovereign, then we have no absolute source for law.
If God is not sovereign … inevitably… men will shrink back from fighting tyranny. If you don’t serve a God, who does his will in the armies of heaven and among the kings of the earth, then you won’t have the nerve to resist tyranny!
If God is not Sovereign, then why would you risk your life to obey this sovereign God who doesn’t even have the Sovereign Right to be obeyed because he’s not sovereign?
If God is not Sovereign, we simply cannot be certain of his law, of his ability to pull of his judgment… or his ability to glorify himself through the wicked acts of men… or his ability to save us….

C. It is a violent salvation. Vs. 30, 15:3 When God saves the meek, somebody is going to get hurt.
Psalm 76:4 “Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. 5 The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.6 At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.7 Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? 8 Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, 9 When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. 12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth. He is Angry. He causes judgement to be heard from heaven.”
1. His Only Begotten Son 2. The world, the flesh, and the devil.
Gal. 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
