Many ignorantly believe that those of the Old Testament had a different faith than those of the New Testament. And yet, in the one chapter of all of inspired Scripture that defines the faith that God grants to those He has chosen and redeemed, every example is taken from the Old Testament. Furthermore, many wrongly interpret the Scripture by the hand of John the apostle stating ‘The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ,’ John 1:17. It is assumed that the Spirit of God juxtaposed Moses to Christ, and the law against grace and truth. Nothing could be further from the truth. All of Scripture declares that God could not lower the standard of His law and justice in order to save sinners. The answer is in the LORD Jesus Christ’s coming, doing and dying to satisfy the law. All of the law and prophets awaited their fulfillment in HIM who was to come, and He did come, not to set aside the law but to fulfill it, Matthew 5:17.

When we read in Hebrews 11:24, “by faith Moses…” it is then that revelation of the LORD Jesus Christ given him by the Spirit of God to look away from himself, or even the law of God that he would communicate to a rebellious nation, to the LORD Jesus Christ who would come and fulfill it on his behalf, and that of every true seed of Abraham. How is it that some preach that the Spirit of God was not given to the children of God in the Old Testament, when clearly the following verses tell us that it was “esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt,” that Moses was separated out unto God there at the burning bush?

Stephen reminded the unbelieving Jewish leaders to whom he preached his final message before they stoned him, that they were of the same spirit of unbelief as the nation of Israel that refused Moses saying, “Who made thee a ruler and a judge?” (Acts 7:27) Such is our nature, but for God’s saving, effectual grace opening our blind eyes and making us willing in the day of HIS power, Psalm 110:3. That is why Moses was led to declare to that second generation of the children of Israel that God had preserved alive after the first had perished in the desert, ‘The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;’, Deuteronomy 18:15.

Every detail of Moses and his work as the mediator and deliverer were a type and picture of the LORD Jesus Christ. In Stephens message in Acts 7 the picture of God’s saving mercies is clearly set forth where we see that it is God who saw the affliction of the people (Acts 7:34), and heard the groaning of the people, and CAME DOWN to deliver them by raising up Moses and sending him into Egypt to deliver them. While many are looking for salvation in an experience, or a ceremony, or a personal decision, the Scripture declares salvation in, by, and through a Man, THE MAN CHRIST JESUS, 1 Timothy 2:5. And yet, not just the Man, but the required sacrifice. Hebrews 11:28 ties the faith of Moses to the Passover lamb slain. “Through faith he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.” Faith is not the Savior. Christ is, the object of faith. God’s decree to save is not the salvation, but the outworking of it in the death of that perfect lamb slain in time, 1 Peter 1:19-20.
