A few weeks ago, we celebrated Memorial Day a day in which we as American citizens remember and reflect upon the lives that were given and sacrificed for the freedoms that we now enjoy. Every Memorial Day, my family and I go downtown to the Airborne Museum and look at the Monuments and the flags that families have placed in honor of friends and loved ones that have served or are currently serving. Last year, my family placed a flag in honor of my son Bradley who served in the US Army and was wounded on his second deployment to Afghanistan. As an American, I am proud and take great pleasure in honoring our nation’s heroes. As a believer in the finished work and Gospel of Jesus Christ, I also should take time to reflect time to why I have eternal life. Due to the sacrifice that Christ paid on the cross over 2,000 years ago, I have eternal life and will one day be in Heaven for eternity. As I reflect back upon this great truth, I must also remember three important things.
First, I must remember where I was prior to believing the Gospel. I was a sinner that was dead in my sins and God’s wrath was upon me. The Apostle John said in his account in John 3:36, “The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who refuses to believe in the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.” Prior to salvation I was spiritually dead with no hope for eternal life.
Secondly, I must remember where I am now. I am now born again, my sins are forgiven and I am washed in the blood of Christ. With His death, burial and resurrection, my sin debt was paid for in full and I was declared Justified. The Apostle Paul stated in Romans 3:24, “being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Not only am I saved from my sin, but I am also saved to obey and serve Him that saved me. Obedience is a sign of our love for Him. Once again, the Apostle John wrote the words of Christ in which He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
Thirdly, I must remember where I am going. Due to my belief in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I have eternal life. It also means that in Heaven I will be delivered from the presence of sin and will live in the presence of Jesus Christ. “ And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.” (1 John 2:25
Brothers and sisters in Christ, do you spend a time each day reflecting upon the cross of Jesus Christ? Do you take time to thank Him and praise Him for the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Do you take time to look forward to the beauties of Heaven that await you? If not, begin today. To the believer, everyday is Memorial Day.
