This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee." (Isaiah 49:15)
This past Monday evening I had the privilege of praying with a group of young people in a prayer meeting organized by Brooks Henderson. You can listen to the brief meditation that I brought. I've been thinking a great deal about the youth lately. My own children in particular are growing up. Two of our kids are now in college and they live very busy lives. It is a period of change. I was thinking about the verse quoted above this morning and the fact that even though some of the strongest human relationships can change, the Lord never changes. The question is posed, "Can a woman forget her sucking child?" This is a reference to a season in life when the child is at its highest level of dependency on the mother. This is when the relationship is strongest, as it were. The Lord is reminding us that even if the strongest of human relationships were to fail and even if "unbreakable" ties were to break—not so with the Lord. Let those words sink in, "they may forget, yet will I not forget thee."
Friend, we have a Rock that will never change. He is not a man that He should lie. His Word is sure and when Christ told the thief on the cross, "To day shalt thou be with me in paradise," it would be so, just as He said. What a comfort! In the words of that great hymn, "When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay." Perhaps you are living in a season of change? Perhaps you are living in the aftermath of devastating change? Let this be your comfort. They may forget, I will not forget.
