This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them." Deuteronomy 5:1.
I continue to be fascinated with the tremendous emphasis Moses places on the "statutes and judgments" of God to the children of Israel. This is the singular most important piece of admonition that he is leaving with God's people. It makes you wonder why this is so? Most people look on the Bible as a book of rules and regulations. Others look on it as a book of history and stories from the past. And then you have others still that see it as nothing more than moral platitudes, especially when you come to the New Testament. If you think of the Bible in such shallow terms then of course it would make no sense as to why this "handbook of rules" would be so singularly important to Moses.
But the Bible is much more than that. You see, every rule, every law, every ordinance, every story, every prophecy, every Psalm, every parable, every episode, every epistle, yea every jot and every tittle is a revelation of the character and personhood of God. Right down to the measurement and materials of the Tabernacle itself. This is what makes the Bible so amazing. It is a revealing of who God is.
Think of it in human terms. Every rule that I have in my household is a reflection of who I am—my convictions and my character. When people walk into my home, there should be a perception of the character of the leadership in my home reflected in the running of the home, etc. The same could be said of any church. The "rules" that govern any organization reflect the character of the leadership (or at least the original leadership). And this of course is true of the Bible itself. Every statute and judgment reveal the character of God. This is why it is so important to be in the Word, day by day. It is a constant discovery of who God is.
