This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
I know we all find opportunities to witness or give a tract, but here's a quick story to be an encouragement to anyone reading. I went into a Dunkin Donuts yesterday to get a coffee. I don't always get the opportunity, but nobody else was around so I was able to speak with the lady behind the counter. After paying for my coffee, I asked:
Me: Can I ask, are you a Christian? Do you attend church anywhere?
DD Lady: Not really. My grandmother used to take me when I was little. But I kind of dropped off.
Me: Did you have a bad experience at church? Or did you just not understand the preaching?
DD Lady: I just didn't understand anything and I lost interest.
Me: That's too bad. Do you mind if I spend one minute explaining to you what the Bible's message is all about?
DD Lady: Sure.
"The Bible's message is very simple actually. You see, we are all going to die one day, right? And the Bible teaches us that after we die, we will face the Judge of all the Earth, God. We have all broken God's law, the Ten Commandments. This is called Sin. I have broken it and you have broken it. We are all sinners and guilty before a Holy God. That's the great dilemma. But the great message of the Bible is that 'God so loved the world that He gave us his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.' This is the reason that Jesus Christ died on a cross. Most people don't understand who Jesus is or why he died. He is God's Son and he lived a life of perfection but he died a terrible death IN OUR PLACE so we would not have to die in a place called Hell. He died for us. And not only that, but we are given his beautiful life of perfection so that we can stand before this great Judge one day as an absolutely righteous individual. It's the miracle of salvation and it's good news. Did you know that the word 'Gospel' simply means 'good news?' It's the best news ever and it's completely free. So, why people hate this good news or reject it, is a real mystery. Wouldn't you agree?"
DD Lady: Oh yes. That makes sense.
Me: Has anyone explained this good news to you before?
DD Lady: I've never heard it explained this way before. This is the first time I've heard it. Thank you so much [great smile].
I then gave her one of our FRAGMENT TRACTS from Matthew 27-28 and told her to read it on her break. It tells the story of Jesus' death and resurrection from the Bible itself. Sometimes you can tell if someone is not interested and just wants to escape the conversation, but she seemed genuinely appreciative, for which I was thankful. Pray for LEX if you remember. That God will bring her to Himself.
"All things else being equal, our prayers are only as powerful as our lives. We pray only as well as we live." A. W. Tozer from the book, The Root of the Righteous.
