This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
"And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb." Romans 4:19.
We read here that Abraham considered not the deadness of his own body. He considered not the impossibility of the situation, humanly-speaking. He did not fix his eyes or his mind upon "the reality." But the passage goes on to say that "he staggered not at the promises of God through unbelief." He considered not—and he staggered not. He considered not the deadness of his own body, but he staggered not at the promises of God. Against hope he believed in hope. He was strong in faith giving glory to God. And yes, he was fully persuaded that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.
These are some of the most glorious assembly of words that I can think of in all of Scripture regarding faith. Read over these few verses for yourself and PRAY for a faith that will consider not the deadness of the present circumstances all around us or even the deadness of your own heart. But will stagger not at the promises of God through unbelief. Let us hope against hope and give glory to God by trusting Him no matter what. Let us not be "almost persuaded" Christians in our prayer life, but "fully persuaded" like father Abraham.
Lord, make this a growing reality in our faith. Amen.
