This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
I have uploaded the opening remarks I made at last week's conference on the Case for United Prayer. I am deeply grateful for the prayers of God's people for the conference, and for me in particular as I sought to communicate this burden of prayer to the best of my ability. I trust that this same burden will fall on many more of God's people over time. May we indeed see a day when prayer meetings will be revived in every church and "incense shall be offered unto His name in every place." Malachi 1:11.
"Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises." Psalm 47:6.
I have to share this blessing from Psalm 47 this morning. Look at that verse. FOUR TIMES in the space of a single verse we are instructed to "SING PRAISES" to God! Talk about not missing the point. :) SING PRAISES. But why? Verse 5 tells us, "God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet!" The shout of God. The shout of a King. This is the sound of victory and triumph. It's wonderful. We are on the winning side. Amen. Verse 1 instructs God's people to "shout unto God with the voice of triumph." Not only does God go up with a shout, but God's people also shout to God with the voice of triumph. This is one noisy Psalm. :) We have nothing to fear. God is with us.
One final beautiful picture is found in verse 9, speaking of God's people, "the SHIELDS OF THE EARTH belong unto God." I absolutely love that imagery. The purpose of a shield is to protect. And the prayers of God's people form a wall of protection around those that we love and intercede for. If there were at least ten righteous found in Sodom, God would have spared the entire city. God's people have a preserving and protecting influence in their homes and in their communities. May we exercise our God-given privilege and responsibility of being the SHIELDS OF THE EARTH through our intercessory prayers for others.
