Students at the University of Pennsylvania have removed a wall-sized portrait of William Shakespeare from Fisher- Bennett Hall and replaced it with a photo of the lesbian writer Audre Lorde.
“Students removed the Shakespeare portrait and delivered it to my office as a way of affirming their commitment to a more inclusive mission for the English department,” Esty wrote in the email to the paper.
According to Etsy, the department had “voted to relocate and replace the [Shakespeare] portrait a few years ago in order to represent a more diverse range of writers.” However, no action was ever taken on that vote and the Shakespeare portrait remained in the entranceway until it was replaced by Lorde’s photo, reported the newspaper....
