SPECIAL REPORT
A Very Sad and Tragic Day at FAME
The following report was written by Rodney Davidson, FAME Field Leader.

We travelled to Nairobi yesterday to get Grace Sturms visa extended for another three months while her work permit is being processed. Thankfully that was done without any problem.

Masavi Primary School teachers had taken the older children to games at Nguni Primary School, and John Musembi had gone to supervise the children from our FAME Centre.

It was just after 7pm when I got a call from Lydiah our nurse telling me that she was at Mwingi Hospital with one of our girls, Esther Muiti David Mbiti. Esther had been run over by a motorbike as she walked along the side of the Nguni / Kithumula road with some other children. They had been on their way back from games with John, when a young man riding a motorbike lost control and ran over her.

Her leg had been broken in two places, and her pelvis and arm were also broken. Apart from a cut on her lip, her head wasn't injured. Esther was conscious and able to talk coherently, and said her leg was very painful.

Lydiah and I talked again after 9pm and she confirmed that the hospital had done what they could for Esther, but recommended that she be transferred to a more specialised orthopaedic hospital. Lydiah and I were planning to take her to Kijabe today. Sadly at 12:30am I got a call from Janice (FAME centre social worker), who had stayed with Esther, to say that Esther had died due to internal bleeding.

John, Lydiah and four of our children spent some hours at the police station today giving details of what happened, and the young man (from Kithumula) is being charged with manslaughter.

Esther had been rescued in December 2014 along with her brothers and sisters, six of them in total.

She had been a regular attender at our believers prayer meeting, and John said our children heartily sang hymns and choruses and recited various memory verses the whole way to Nguni that morning.

The guardians are going to confirm the date for the funeral, but think it will be either Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

To be honest I am still in shock and can hardly believe it has really happened.

Rodney.
