South Africa's Desmond Tutu Says He Wouldn't Worship “Homophobic” God
Desmond Tutu (shown), the controversial black Anglican archbishop of South Africa, came out boldly for homosexual rights in comments July 26, going as far as to say that he could not worship a God who rejects the aberrant lifestyle. The 81-year-old Tutu, who retired as the Anglican archbishop of Cape Town back in 1996, was speaking at a news conference for the launch of a United Nations campaign to promote homosexual rights.
“I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven,” declared the high-profile black African leader, who was a key champion for the end of white majority rule in South Africa in the 1970s and '80s. “No, I would say sorry — I mean, I would much rather go to the other place,” he said. Tutu added for emphasis, “I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this.”
