Pastor politician: Church should have fought civil unions
A Chicago pastor who's running for mayor says churches in Illinois are "under condemnation" for not doing more to stop the Legislature from approving civil unions for homosexual couples.
The Rev. James Meeks, who also is a state senator, voted against the bill. But it passed overwhelmingly and Gov. Pat Quinn has pledged to sign it into law.
Meeks told WMBI radio that the church failed to be the "salt and light" that Jesus commissioned to preserve and enlighten society. The politician-pastor says that's what he hopes to do if Chicagoans elect him mayor next year....
