Poll: Women today treated with less chivalry
Feminists may insist that life for women has gotten better since the days when raucous female activists marched in the streets for equality and questioned traditional social mores about men, marriage and career.

Pollsters say otherwise. Things are out of kilter. And pretty dismal, according to a Harris Poll released Monday.

Eight out of 10 Americans, in fact, say, "Women today are treated with less chivalry than in the past." Seven out of 10 say women do not receive equal pay for equal work, a bulwark of the feminist war on the status quo. Two-thirds say women are "discriminated against" when it comes to supervisory or executive jobs, while an equal number agree that the U.S. has "a long way to go" to reach gender equality. Just 35 percent said women got equal pay for equal work. ...

Thanks for the lead, Rick. I will definitely look into this (Elliot's book and messages", here on SA). I'd also like to hear his take on the ascendency of non-seven-day creation in the OPC (which I find rather annoying with its tendency to "downplay" the extent of God's miraculous capacity).

Thanks, Neil.

I need to pray for courage/wisdom for my pastor that he will rightly persue Biblical doctrine without fear of splitting his church.

On one occasion I was sternly rebuked by my own pastor in front of the whole church during Sunday school for suggesting that men should work and women stay home. Maybe it was the way I said it that prompted the response. A more likely reason is the fact that many women in our church DO work and DO have careers along with their husbands, and our church had recently hemorrhaged members following statements made by the pastor during a sermon on the subject of theonomy.
Still, it was very disheartening to be slapped-down on such a fundamentally important family issue by my own "conservative" OPC pastor in my own "conservative" OPC church.
Since then I've learned to keep my mouth shut on this and other "sensitive" issues in our church.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus!

'Since then I've learned to keep my mouth shut on this and other "sensitive" issues in our church.'

I sympathize completely, John. Principled, rational dissent is no more tolerated in "conservative" churches today than in "liberal" ones. Formal disputation (e.g. the Marburg Colloquy) is a lost art, which I think is due to cultural hostility to logic & reason, reinforced by sermons emphasizing "heart religion" etc.

I know of only a handful of Reformed pastors (some of whom are deceased now) who have welcomed serious questions from the floor, which is the Biblical method.

This is because women are no longer a separate gender in society.

Marriage is defunct.

And

Mankind is out of sync with God and His providence.

Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church

1Tim 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

I disagree with the equality statement. Men and women are equal, but they have different roles. It is functional subordination, as God the Son was subordinate to God the Father while He was on earth, despite being perfectly equal with Him. Men, equal to women, were given the task of provision and leadership, whereas women, equal to men, were given the task of child-rearing and overall support to the entire family unit (and the man is to be overall support to his wife).

I am in Total agreement with the statements below. And I realize that even in so called conservative christain cirles we would be considered out of step and even Chauvinistic. But that charge would be false. God has distinct roles for each of us, but even the church has bought into the lies of the world.

Ok if western civilization is so bad to women then try living with the taliban for a week and tell us how much they are for equality? It is amazing how satan uses discontentment to foment ideas until the become full blown movements. Let's get really candid here if women were not supplanting me in the work place more men would be working and women could become more like a Proverbs 31 wife than a stressed out frustrated person. I think men who are married and force there wifes out to work have also bought into the lie for there own personal gain. I need a new boy toy so my wife's income pays for that instead of trying to stay out of debt and let women who clearly want to be at home with the kids be there. The other issue is divorce rates. Since GOD clearly made man the head of his house hold, then why would any husband want another man over his wife. That is exactly what happens when she is at work all day listening to her boss. Women become attracted to the dominate and most available male figure and if she's not a strong Christian then she could fall prey to adultery.

Excellent comment

Here is another good one:

"I remember when women stayed home with the kids and the men moonlighted to make ends meet. The children of this arrangement turned out well. Now that women have bought the feminist lie that they can have it all, they "go to work" and leave the kids with others. The children of this arrangement are depressed, suicidal, self-destructive, have STD (VD for the older reader), gotten pregnant, had an abortion, and are learning disabled. They are also obese, diabetic, subject to eating disorders, have lice and are gender confused. "Working" mothers are torn between mothering and doing their "job". Meanwhile these "working" mothers are treated for a variety of stress-induced disorders as well. So these distracted workers work less efficiently and are consequently paid less. As for chivalry? That was reserved for earlier times when women were appreciated for their contribution in the home and society as stay at home moms."

What I have seen for some time now is a constant drive toward equality in every area of life. The Scriptures say that there is one area where men and women are equal and that is salvation. Men and women are not equal nor did God create them to be. We are different and have differing strengths. When women "excel" in big business, they do so by becoming more...like a man. Women go home. Be mothers and wives. Lead the home and do the job your were created to do. If the family can't afford for her to be at home, then trim your expenses until you can. If we get the balance back, then society will benefit and thrive.
