Most Americans Believe Jesus Speaks to Them
A majority of Americans believe Jesus speaks to them in some form or another, finds a new survey.

Fifty-two percent of Americans said Jesus speaks to them by influencing or connecting directly with their mind, emotions or feelings, according to a survey conducted by The Barna Group. Slightly more than two in five people said Jesus communicates with them through the Bible passage they read or that is read to them.

And more than one-third of the population said Jesus communicates to them through signs; sermons or teachings that address their immediate situation; miraculous circumstances or outcomes; and through words spoken to them by someone else. ...

Back in the early 90s, I was the song director during a special service, at a church that had gotten in to the Prophetic Word ,or Prophesying movement. At the end of the message, it became pandamonium. The church leaders were giving out these grandious personal "words from God" (as if God himself were speaking) to people. I began to leave in the middle of it, when a couple came up and said,"Please, do you have a word from God for us"? I just shook my head and said no. But then I said wait a minute, yes I do. They looked hopeful and I said "Go home and read your Bible". They looked dissapointed and walked of. In guess people want direction, but they want it on their own terms, with all the bells and whistles.
I agree. Martin Luther said "God mediates His presence to us through the Word" Many times us Biblisist get accused of thinking it's just the Bible and the mind. Well it is the Bible, but it's through the Holy Spirit. So it's not the Word without the Spirit, and it's Not the Spirit without the Word.

At one stroke, you seem to miss the whole point of revelation:

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
John 10:16 KJV

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:27-28 KJV

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3:20 KJV

Surely the Lord does communicate with his people directly, in a personal way, maybe not audibly but with a certainty, by his Spirit? Without that, all you are left with is an intellectual Christianity which avails nothing.

Something seems amiss with this poll, or at least the way people are taking it. Either the questions were phrased fuzzily, or the poll was taken at "random" outside an Assemblies of God church somewhere. A poll of 1000 is way too small to make it a consensus of "Americans', too.

There is a grand difference between the charismatic belief that Christ is talking to you directly as a prophet would hear, and a belief in having a 'personal relationship with Jesus Christ' -- a common modern term that could imply even the general communication of prayer to Christ and reading the word of God, which any true Christian does. At 52% affirmative, I wonder whether the questions were phrased so confusingly such that we would also wonder how to answer.

In all of my Christian walk, I have met very few people who believed Jesus was talking to them, or the Holy Spirit more accurately -- and they were all charismatics. I used to be one.

Love these polls.
The Lord may speak to us through 'Russian Communism', or a 'dead dog'. We know where to confirm the truth of that 'voice'.

Quite correct, San Jose John. Just about the only thing Jesus is saying to them is,

Matthew 7
24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock.
25 "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock.
26 "And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand.
27 "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and it fell, and great was its fall."---]]NASB

Just open up the Bible and start reading, if you REALLY want to "hear" Jesus speaking.
