Liberty University invites Glenn Beck to speak at their graduation
Well-known radio host Glenn Beck will address Liberty University’s Class of 2010 at Commencement on Saturday, May 15, Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. announced today at Convocation. Joining Beck as a speaker will be Dr. Paige Patterson, the current president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Patterson will also be the keynote speaker at Baccalaureate Service on May 14.

‚ÄúLiberty University is blessed to have two national conservative leaders speak at our 2010 Commencement ceremony,‚ÄĚ Falwell said. ‚ÄúDr. Patterson is one of the patriarchs of Christian higher education, and Beck is one of the few courageous voices in the national media standing up for the principles upon which this nation was founded. Both speakers continue Liberty‚Äôs long tradition of Commencement speakers who are making a positive impact on society in all walks of life.‚ÄĚ ...

Hi Alan,
I guess I did not make myself clear. I was not aplauding the fact some people are looking to these "leaders". I was decrying the fact that some have elevated the political commentary and opinions of these lost men to a status that is almost equal to the Word of God. There are people who spend 3-5 hours a day on this stuff and I do not think that is healthy at all.

To these "leaders" it is all partisan politics and they exist to stir up anger and unrest.

Pastor Marquedant, Sorry!

You made yourself very clear in your first comments. I may have sounded like I perceived them another way, but I did understand your thoughts as you have described them above. I was not trying to discount what you said earlier, but only trying to show that we cannot justify ourselves in giving these men "ANY" position of authority in our lives, even if it is only political. It seems pretty evident that those verses which I quoted would condemn even that.

This is how a lot of ecumenical alliances are conceived, by saying "it's only political, or it's just moral, or it's cultural, etc." This is what I finally got a hold of as a result of this incident. Lord willing, these men will no longer have my ear.

THANKS!

I find it especially ironic that Glenn Beck is glorifying the early American patriots -- when Mormonism was totally unknown to any of them!

Pastor Marquedant,

I had to agree, when I first read your comments, but it really struck me when I considered the fact that there are no exception clauses in the following verses:

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" 2Co 6:14

"And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?" 2Co 6:15

"And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." 2Co 6:16

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you," 2Co 6:17

"And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." 2Co 6:18

How can the ungodly give godly counsel?

Thank you for your commentary on this issue Pastor Hranek.

Unfortunately many confuse "Conservatism" with "Christianity." They are obviously not the same thing, as was said before. Glenn Beck's a Morman? So, how many of us listen to Sean Hannity, who's a Roman Catholic?

I really think God's people have lost sight of the doctrine of "Biblical separation." It is really hard to find much instruction on that issue, even on Sermon Audio, with its thousands and thousands of sermons. I for one would really be interested if anyone could recommend a good sermon on that topic. I am having a very difficult time with my family over that problem.

I have quite often listened to Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity & even Rush Limbaugh, but even where there is political agreement there is an element of dissatisfaction with it. It's kind of like being really thirsty and drinking a bottle of Coke. It only satisfies the thirst as long as you are drinking it.

Anyway, I have yet to hear any one of the three I mentioned above suggesting a godly solution to any of our cultural problems, because they don't have one.

I was under the impression that Liberty was a distinctively Christian school. With all due respect to Mr. Beck, he is not a Christian; he is a Mormon. I know my answer, and it isn't politics.
It seems as if Liberty has moved off center in the past few years. First by embracing a Rick Warren/ Bill Hybles methodology. More recently, it seems that many students from Liberty have embraced Postmodernism with it's arrogance againt those who still belivein objective truth. That last few liberty grads I've met are more in line with the Emergent Church movement than Biblical Christianity. Those may have been an exeption, but one some doors are opened a little, they end up opened all the way.
You do have a great point about Conservatism and Jesus. Our ultimate loyalties do belong to Jesus.

So a "Christian" college will allow someone who is not a Christian to address the students as one of the last deliveries given to them before graduating? A man who does not believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, is allowed to take the podium at a "Christian" college?

This shows the error of new evangelicalism...ie , Co-operation with UNBELIEF in order to promote a Christian worldview. New evangelicals refuse to separate from error, and instead they pursue more association with error.

This also shows the warped-thinking agenda of many "christians" who are trying to engage the culture by linking up with every group under the sun that denies the truth. How will Mormons and Roman Catholics change the culture when they deny the GOSPEL that alone can change men?

Dear TT,
I agree and believe those who compromise the Gospel and their Christian witness by association and implicit approval of those of false religions will not receive the blessing of God on their endeavors. I hope Christians will repent of this lack of faith and begin to trust in the LORD more fully. May they truly seek His Kingdom first.
