Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The session of Providence Presbyterian Church has decided to set apart Thursday, August 13, 2020 as a day of prayer and fasting for our nation. We will be holding a service that evening that will involve preaching and both pastoral and congregational prayer. I would like to invite you to join us in this day of prayer either in person or wherever you are. I will be sending out updates and suggestions throughout the week on how to sanctify the day but wanted to start today by sending out a section from the ARP Directory of Worship (DOW) regarding how to observe such a day: "Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD" (Joel 1:14) "Fasting is abstaining from food and/or other comforts for a season for the purpose of devoting oneself more completely to God in search of blessing, relief of affliction, intercession for others, or other purposes. As much as can conveniently be done, the time of fasting should be spent in private and public reading of the Scriptures, attending to the preaching of the word, singing of praise, and especially in praying to God concerning the purpose of the fast."
