Neil: I have used a compass recently myself and have taught Trail Life Trailmen recently how to use theirs. Compasses remain important. GPS is only good when it works. DoD can add a whole ton of error into it. I miss LORAN myself. Amen on Bowditch.

Ok, Ok, here's the big deal. Sextants won't help this problem. Compasses help with the direction a ship is sailing or steaming. A sextant helped tell where the ship was at the time the sights were taken.

If a ship is relying on magnetic north, a small amount of error over a long distance equals a lot of error. So when the declination changes a lot, it means a lot of potential error.

In the modern area, many larger ships rely on a gyroscope that works off of true North or the actual north pole, not magnetic north. This only impacts those ships if the gyro breaks and they have to back to magnetic. Smaller ships have bigger problems if they are magnetic only, but ostensibly could work out the change in declination as part of a set-and-drift calculation and course correction. Folks doing land navigation using map and compass like orienteering would also potentially have increased difficulty.

Surprising yet not so. The regularity of the stars, planets, moon, sun, etc thanks to a loving God who upholds His creation so regularly that we perceive so-called laws of nature is mire reliable than man's contraptions. Truth is that in this Fallen world, navigation requires a back up. We used all means of dicerning the ship's position back in the day, incl celestial navigation. But GPS is too easy & computerized navigation is too slick. Someone needs to be sure that gizmo is working correctly. It's a reminder to not forget the ancient paths, either on the sea or traveling thru this life to our desired haven.

But Mike, Acts 11:18 "Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life." To whom does God GRANT repentance? Like Faith Mike, Repentance is the gift of God.
