Hi Michael. As for the Muslims, I think the wording in the Catechism is a little unclear. If it means God will save them upon faith in Jesus as Son of God and Lord and Savior, I agree. If it means Muslims will be saved without such faith and simply believe Jesus is a prophet of many and not the divine Son, then I would disagree. The Bible says there is salvation in no other and by no other name. The Bible says to believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved. If Muslims do not confess the lorship of Christ, they will not be partakers of salvation.

So scripture alone is off limits to Catholics or they are accused of taking things out of context when using the Bible to support what they believe. Is there something wrong with going to the Bible alone to get a Catholic doctrine? See, you guys cannot even let others play by your rules. Sounds similar to the behavior of Jims favorite apologists Ankerberg and Weldon.

Jim Lincoln wrote:
as the Ian Paisley site pointed out, Purgatory, Catholic Created, Devil Driven, Man Maintained
Yep, Jim, you are right. It is man maintained, by men who wrote the Bible. Devil driven? No, because the devil didn't author the scriptures. Catholic Christian oxymoron? No. Ankerberg and Weldon Bible Christians? Well, they say they are, but they are also major hypocrites who also cannot abide by their own rules when they write their books about those whom they do not understand or refuse to understand. In one book they accuse Mormons of rejecting 2000 years of church history, but when Ankerberg and Co. write against Catholics, guess who is now rejecting 2000 years? There is no excuse for such behavior coming from supposed apologists and Bible Christians. It's a classic example of hypocrites on public display! It would be nice to get a detailed explanation of why they do this because it makes me question what they are really doing.

Lyn, what then do we do about St. Pauls teaching of a salvation by fire or Jesus talking about a world to come where sins are forgiven or not?

Agreed with Truth Seeker.

Jim, take a look, you will most likely find that something you do in life has pre Christian origins. As for Halloween or All Saints, does not the Bible say that those who have gone before us are examples, to imitate the Apostles, to follow them as they follow Christ. Good reason to remember the faithful who have trod the path before us. Same goes for Christmas. I wonder if the Christmas opponents ever read the scriptures about Christs birth or say anything about his birth and its significance. Distort as you will, but you will only dig yourself deeper into hypcrisy as your favorite apologists have already done to themselves.

If there was no purgatory and if there is no rapture there, why does St. Paul talk about being saved by fire and Jesus teaching about a world to come in which certain sins are forgiven or not forgiven.
So the Pope devalues science. A lot of Christians do because the biblical record is more important and reliable.

They have every right to be concerned with this. Calvin was an erroneous man and his ideas are no improvement over the faith that was already in place before his arrival on earth.

But Jim, what about your traditions. What if in the end you find out your church is apostate...it is possible. But then it will be too late. Then what? So apparently there is a tradition that God forgives non Catholics for doctrinal and tradition error, but does not do the same for Catholics. This is certainly evident in the mentality manifested in the writings of non Catholics.

Michael, there are enough similarities in doctrine and history and moral flaws among Baptists and Protestants. Prots have persecuted Catholics and others, Baptists have clashed among themselves not to mention having the problems of sex scandals too. Is this an improvement over the Catholic faith? Any more biblical? Not to me. Baptists and Protestants(to respect your discerning the two) hold to the same basic doctrines--faith alone, scripture alone, and the other solas. You can separate the two if you chose, but their doctrine and fruit doesn't seem very good or at least not greatly improved over the Catholic faith, so I see no reason to esteem a Baptist over some other Christian.

Lance Eccles wrote:
Mr Gendron believes he has been given permission (through an apparition on his bedroom ceiling, he tells us elsewhere) to commit all the mortal sins he likes, and that he's still guaranteed entry into heaven.
Is that Christianity?
Maybe he read Martin Luther's words "Sin boldly" "Commit some sin to throw the devil off." And no this is not the Christianity of the Bible, to answer your question Lance. The Bible teaching is "Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul," and "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." If perfect doctrine gets you into heaven, what's happened to Martin Luther and his followers? Will they be in heaven teaching and believing such lies, to sin boldly and enjoy a little sin to thwart the devil?

Reliance on "Tradition" is expressly prohibited in four books of the Bible : - Deuteronomy 4;2, 13;32, Proverbs 30;5-6, I Corinthians 4;6, Revelations 22;18-19.
But not in 2nd THessalonians..."Hold the traditions you have been taught, whether by word or our epistle." So now what do we do? Maybe those scriptures are referring to your cherished traditions.

Just what do you think the Bible is then? just a book of religious stories?
Liberals and Roman Catholics might like people to think it is
As for liberals, yes. As for Roman Catholics that sounds like a pious Protestant idea. Of course do your words apply to liberal protestants? To be fair, I hope you would say yes.

Abigail, you know no more about my personal beliefs than I know about yours. The Bible is more "Catholic" than you may think. If it's not, then whose is it? You think it's your book, but Jim and others will debate to the contrary.
As for the Catholic Church being in crisis, so are the Protestant churches. Or are all the Abigails, Jims and others in perfect agreement now? When that happens perhaps then the call to "Come out" will be clear. Until then "Lord to whom shall we go. You have the words of eternal life."

Yep, he's right. More scriptural proof for the Catholic Church. Marriage is more than an outward ceremony, but a sacrament in which God's sanctifying grace is shed forth among husband wife and children. Why else would the Bible say they are sanctifed and the bed to remain undefiled?

I vote the first two: baptism and the indwelling spirit. "Except a man is born of water and the spirit, he cannot see the kingdom of God." "Baptism doth now save you..." And the Gentiles "made acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Ghost." Baptism and the Holy Ghost.

Good for the Vatican. Jesus says to drive out demons and resist the devil and overcome evil with good.

It seems to me that the problems that come up in modern languages about Vatican contradictions with scripture can be best avoided by not reading/hearing these teachings
What goes by the term "Biblical Christianity" is victim of contradictions as well. Just open up the phone book of a major urban area and go to the churches section and take a look.

Pugatory a myth? I don't thik so:

And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor the world to come.(Matthew 12:31)

So here we have evidence that in the future some sins may be forgiven in the next world, but not others. If heaven and hell were the only "worlds" what do we do with this other world to come in which some sins are forgiven and others are not?

If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.(1 Corinthians 3:14,15)

Here we see a giving of rewards to come. Notice for some, there will be a salvation by fire. Hellfire is for those unsaved and heaven is for the saved, yet this fire yields salvation--heaven in the end. A classic understanding of purgatory has been that of a cleansing fire.

As for the Mass: "This is my body; this is my blood," and "Except ye eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, ye have no life."
