John UK wrote: Oops, it says he died for all. Now ain't that somethin'. Oh boy! No need for Mr Calvin to respond, it's only scripture after all. Mr. Calvin responds:"He makes this favor common to all, because it is propounded to all, and not because it is in reality extended to all; for though Christ suffered for the sins of the whole world, and is offered through God's benignity indiscriminately to all, yet all do not receive him." [Commentary on Romans 5:18] "True it is that the effect of His death comes not to the whole world. Nevertheless, forasmuch as it is not in us to discern between the righteous and the sinners that go to destruction, but that Jesus Christ has suffered His death and passion as well for them as for us, therefore it behoves us to labour to bring every man to salvation, that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ may be available to them ..." [Sermon CXVI on the Book of Job (31:29-32)] |

Benjamin Keach – Baptist preacher“No man can come unto Me, except it were given unto him of My Father” (John 6:65). That which is given, Keach emphasized, “is what enables a sinner to come to Christ: the gift of the indwelling Spirit, the affections of a new heart, grace, faith, and divine power.” (Gospel Mysteries Unveiled 2: 394-95) “Regeneration he described as “the forming of Christ in the soul,” a new creation or a new birth, which is accomplished by the agency of the Holy Spirit. Keach believed that Regeneration takes place when the Holy Spirit comes to indwell a person, and a new nature, that of Christ, is formed within the heart of that individual.” Richard Sibbes - Puritan “Sibbes taught that when the Spirit of God enters the heart of a sinner, regenerating him and persuading him of the truth of the gospel, the Spirit immediately begins to live within that person.” “How may we know that we have this blessed, indwelling, governing Spirit? Sibbes said,” "By living and moving, by actions vital, even so may a man know he hath the Spirit of God by its blessed effects in operations…. as the soul quickens the body, so doth the Spirit the soul EVERY SAVING GRACE is a sign that the SPIRIT IS WITHIN US." BTW this is not Presby posting. |

5/29/09 6:27 PM John UK | Wales"So when the Bible says that faith is a gift, you need to properly understand what is meant there. You can't actually receive "faith" as a gift, because it is something that YOU exercise, and it is impossible to give THAT as a gift. See what I'm saying?" 5/29/09 5:43 PM John UK | Wales "You, on the other hand, want the Lord to believe FOR you, and thus you are saved. What???? This "faith" that you are talking about, it's a what? A gift? You must be joking old bean, and I'll tell you why. FAITH is laying hold of CHRIST. And you reckon THAT can be given as a GIFT????? What???? Can you not see how ridiculous that is? Salvation is by grace through faith." |

"Faith in the living God and his Son Jesus Christ is always the result of the new birth, and can never exist except in the regenerate. Whoever has faith is a saved man." C.H. Spurgeon "Now unless he be born of God, he cannot see it. Suppose the kingdom of God be what it will, he cannot see it before he be begotten of God; suppose it be the Gospel, he cannot see it before he be brought into a state of regeneration; believing is the consequence of the new birth, "not of blood, nor of the will of man, but of God." John Bunyan "I am now fifty-five years of age and I am more than ever convinced that the truth of the new birth is a revelation from God Himself, and that without it you can never be saved." George Whitefield |
