While I didn't sign the petitions because if we were going to secede why would we ask for permission?
My thoughts as well. I don't remember hearing that we ever "asked" England if we could secede from them. I was always taught that we simply "declared our independence" and began the process (which included the War of Independence) of leaving their empire.

These petitions are just theater designed to show the feds how many of us in the states feel about the increasing centralization of American political power.

Christians are not part of the solution. They've spent decades enjoying some of Planned Parenthood's fruit while deriding its other fruit. Until Christians go cold turkey from ALL that PP has to offer, the Hobby Lobbies of the world will find themselves with almost no empathy from our evangelical churches and leaders.
So true--and what a slippery slope it turned out to be.

I grew up around people, "good", "honest", church-going people who openly ridiculed and derided any family with more than 2 or 3 kids. The BC pill was considered enlightened and was at that time the "savior" of our culture from the "catastrophic" effects of "overpopulation". By their predictions (extrapolating baby-boom birthrates) the USA population should've been 800-900 million people today. Instead we're having to "import" people just to maintain a reasonably youthful population. Proverbs 14:28

Interesting.

Years ago I remember hearing a pastor criticize Pentecostals for their tendency to mention and give attention to Satan in their sermons and messages. He claimed that in doing so they were unintentionally and unwittingly increasing interest in Satan instead of leading the congregation to focus on God.

This article seems to show that the opposite effect is also true, much to the chagrin of people like Dawkins, I'm sure.

What is the proper way to evangelize?
Declare the Word of God to people, making sure you yourself are blameless so they will "have" to listen to you. Spirit of God does all the work, but you are His means to do so.

People like Ray Comfort are on the right track, using God's law and teaching that it must be kept perfectly, to convict people and show them that it cannot be kept perfectly so as to introduce Christ as the only alternative to man's natural capacity for self-justification.

Check out his YouTube channel.

Maybe Jim's talking about adoption, for example, as an "alternative" to abortion. Not entirely clear from his post but that's what I assume he meant. Crisis Pregnancy Center (or is it Community Pregnancy Center) is a group some of the people in our church support.

I still remember when the TV shows about wildlife censored the scenes where the lion actually killed and ate the zebra, causing me to wonder sometimes how the lions were supposed to survive if they never ate.

Now, apparently, the pendulum has swung the other way, and they show EVERYTHING.

Don't underestimate the Canadians. They initially cleaned our clocks in two wars (Revolution and 1812) before eventually "losing" both (as Britain's ally/colony).

Lincoln didn't call for troops until SC commenced hostilities by firing on a Federal fort. If that wasn't a "casus belli" requiring a military response, I don't know what is. Presumably a new Republic of Texas would not be so stupid.
Texas will have to be on the watch for any "Edmund Ruffin" wannabes. Whether indigenous or "planted" by "union" opposition to discredit any legitimate secession effort.

Just read his Wikipedia entry. He sounds like he was one bitter dude.

I for one am very happy that President Obama has been re-elected. Some of these comments are just plain sad and unchristian. I feel sorry that so many of you are so bitter.
I don't feel bitter, in that the word bitter (at least to me) has a vindictive nuance to it. Despair is probably a better description of the prevailing mood I presently see coming from my fellow right-wingers.

Still, for Christians there's always/eventually Heaven, regardless of whatever happens to the USA.

Maybe younger generations are more accepting of this because older generations don't teach them any better.
Yep.

In another post I cited breakdown of the family unit as a general cause of increased acceptance of homosexuality.

Yep.

Ron Paul is too this, Herman Cain is too that, Newt Gingrich is too whatever, etc., and etc.

Meanwhile, the least qualified guy manages to get elected (AGAIN!) while the rest of us continue to obsess over trying to find the "perfect" candidate.

Maddening.

Yikes. I'm astonished at how quickly these people have gone from cowering in their dark, dank, closets to becoming a major force to be reckoned with.
It was primarily a combination of 2 things.

AIDS epidemic of the 1980s provided a huge sympathy platform for them to get more positive attention, and the masterful ability to appropriate tremendous residual social-justice momentum from Civil Rights and ERA movements to their own cause.

Divorce and the general breakdown of the family unit over time probably helped them a lot too, allowing them to advance with much less resistance.

Couldn't agree more.

Younger generations being far more accepting of homosexuality tells me that we are barely a generation away from becoming Sodom.

I knew we were finished back in the early 90s when I got my first job, which caused me to want to generously donate to charities as anonymously as possible, until certain family members read me the riot act regarding how much tax-refund money I'd lose if I didn't report all my giving to the IRS (!!!).

Here I was trying NOT to be like the pharisees of old, blowing the trumpet to announce their "generosity", while Uncle Sam was doing and continues to do his level best to try to get me to be like them. Tempting me with my own earnings.

Uncle Sam not only wants your money but also the "credit" for "helping you", Joe-citizen, to be more "generous" with your (or is it their?) money.

As soon as I saw Abramoff's name in the title I just knew Jim would be all over this article.

Mike, you and others sure have your hands full having to fact-check Jim all the time but you're doing a good job, as far as I can tell.

One of my previous landlords did the same thing. He was politically conservative and outspoken enough to admonish his renters that if the Democrat candidate won, taxes would likely go up, and he would pass the additional cost from his higher taxes onto them in the form of rent increases.

Interesting.

I don't want presidents to lie to me either but I do want a president who is good at "lying" if the context is to throw off our true enemies (Al Quaida, etc.)

Pretty much everything you say resonates with me though.

I could be wrong, but maybe Jim doesn't care for the amendment method of changing the Constitution. Maybe he prefers Obama's ignore and bypass method. But always remember Republican corruption.
I can believe that. As long as the ignore/bypass method is being done by somebody he likes, as opposed to someone like GW BUSH.

Unprofitable Servant wrote:
Maybe Jim should read the constitution, it does not condone slavery. The 3/5 rule was a blessing to black slaves. You have to think about the census...
This is my understanding as well, but previously I had wrongly assumed the South wanted blacks counted less when it was actually the North that DIDN'T want them counted so as to limit Southern population-based political clout.
