"David and Goliath" I Samuel 17:40-47

There are some old testament stories that captivate our children on which we build upon. This one especially and yet so often the heart of it is missing. This story pictures God and His enemies. We also deal with the profound facts in the Kingdom of God, of faith and tranquility.

The situation takes place about 1063 B.C. Saul has been rejected and David has been anointed and has left the palace to tend to his father's sheep. The Philistines and Israel are going to battle with the valley in between them. It had already been foretold in the time of Samuel in the temple and before that God had promised Israel the land of Canaan and here David pictures Christ who will provide victory and give them the land of Canaan.

The significance of this story is great. This is a picture of the old testament Christ and His church and Kingdom whereby He (being Christ) would be victorious and give His people the land and kingdom. This 9'9" giant had 150 lbs of armor...his spear head weighed about 18 lbs and he struck fear in God's people. David hears the cowardness and situation in the camp and responds with "who is this uncircumcised Philistine that defiles the armies of the Living God?" Despite all unbelief he stands against this mighty giant and all the taunts. David stands in his faith....stands amid all the cowardness and takes offense, standing against him and the Lord delivered the Philistine providentially before the battle even BEGINS! The significance? That we may understand the critical point that this is a typical picture of the Kingdom of Christ (Christ conquering in David and ruling His Kingdom in peace as pictured in Solomon.) They were types and shadows of the realities to come! Christ would establish His Kingdom surely and it would be established forever. By faith David took hold of the promise to Abraham and took on the giant Goliath and rightfully so! And he went out conquering and to conquer to give His son a kingdom of tranquility and peace. Do we see what this means?

We are given a Kingdom of peace and tranquility because of Christ who conquered and gave us the victory of His Kingdom! God has already set it aside for us in Christ....a Kingdom we and our children have a part! Just like in the old testament the land of Canaan being given to His people in their faith so we (even in this day and age) do not coward, but stand FIRM in our faith and like David draw from the whole armor of God in the Word of God knowing He will certainly deliver His promise to us! We only have to wait for the entire Kingdom to come....but rest assured we HAVE THE VICTORY in our Lord Jesus Christ!!!
