Sermon Text: Hebrews 2:1-18
I. How would you define life and death? * Biological- * Spiritual-
II. Life * Power- ie. Physical strength (youth), money, influence (adulthood). * Freedom – ie. Lack of restraints, limitations, internal or external
III. Death is the curtailing and ending of all power and freedom to choose and do. * Common philosophical: man as a thinking, planning, emotional being
IV. Life For the ordinary human, is the power and freedom to choose and do. * The biblical ideas of life and death are quite different!
V. Life is to know God, have fellowship with God, to be comfortably in God’s presence
VI. Death is to be separated from God, alienated, unwelcome 1. The slavery of anger 3. The slavery of Rebellion 2. The slavery of hedonism
And the answer is submission and trust in God who is flesh and blood. (1 Timothy 3:16 ESV) Early creedal statement:
Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
