Jesus protected His disciples saying, "take no money bag, knapsack or sandals" as they were furthering the gospel in Luke 10:4. Now that Jesus is going to be scourged and crucified He will be leaving them for a time, now is the time to take all those things and also a sword. As Christians we are called to protect our friends, family and loved ones from the evils of this world. There is a time to turn the other cheek, but there comes a time to protect oneself and others as this society worsens and becomes more intolerant and militant against faithful Christians. We are not called to be violent, but we are to protect others from the violence of this present darkness. God is sovereign and uses ordinary means and we are to use these means to protect and take care of ourselves and others.
