The Jewish Sanhedrin had found Christ guilty of blasphemy; however, the Jewish court was powerless to act upon their decision and enforce a penalty. Rome had subjugated all Judea at this time and removed civil authority from that state. The Sanhedrin was forced to ask the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, to crucify Jesus. Knowing the Roman authority would be uninterested in charges of blasphemy, the Sanhedrin therefore accused Christ of misleading the nation, refusing to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming to be a king. Pilate found the Lord innocent of all charges brought by the Sanhedrin. Furthermore, Pilate may have been intellectually convinced that Christ was indeed a savior, but Pontius Pilate was one who put the fear of man above the fear of God. The Lord suffered at the hands of Pontius Pilate sustaining in His own body the full wrath of God against the sins of man so that His own people might be spared.
