God provides righteousness for sinners who are not righteous. “God made him to be sin who knew no sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). And because we are “in him,” what he is counts for us, his righteousness, his morality, his devotion. We are not justified by the righteousness that Christ works in us, but by the righteousness that Christ is for us.
