We have all been called by God. Called to work, marriage or celibacy, holiness, obedience, and salvation. Sometimes we even know a more specific calling. Our calls are God's invitations for us to share in Him and His work on earth. Sounds terrific, doesn't it. However, these calls are not unopposed. Satan, our own sin, and even circumstances can make God's calling appear costly and difficult, if not impossible. As a result, we often find ourselves uncertain, anxious, and afraid to listen and obey God's call.
Like us, David was called by God. Unlike us, He was explicitly called to be King of Israel! After the defeat of Goliath, David is thrust deep into the kingdom's politics. He is surrounded by potential enemies, war, and plots against his life… Becoming King looks impossible. Yet by the end of Chapter 19, though not yet King, David has a covenant friend, a wife, the love and admiration of the entire kingdom, a stack of victories over the Philistines, and safety. How? The Lord delivers David from all who oppose his call upon him. As we will see, the methods vary, but the victory is sure. Like David, we can be sure of success in God's calling on our lives. No matter how impossible it may seem at times. Because the Lord delivers his people from all who oppose his call upon them. |
