It has now been more than a decade since the Charles Colson and Richard John Neuhaus teamed up to give us the document known as Evangelicals and Catholics Together” (ECT). That document, which has the endorsement of hundreds of key evangelical and Roman Catholic leaders, marked the start of a major campaign to warm relations between the Roman Catholic Church and evangelical Protestants.

At first it seemed ECT might actually cause a backlash effect that would coalesce a vigorous defense of the gospel from evangelical Protestants. There were lots of excellent critiques of Evangelicals and Catholics Together in the early days.

There was also a famous summit meeting in Orlando in January of 1995. R. C. Sproul, John MacArthur, D. James Kennedy, and John Ankerberg met with Chuck Colson, Bill Bright, and J.I. Packer and challenged them on biblical grounds regarding their deliberate compromise on the doctrine of justification by faith. Colson, Bright, and Packer later issued a clarification and multiple press releases claiming they had fully resolved the concerns of their critics, but they never withdrew their support from ECT, and the ecumenical juggernaut rolled on...

“ Roman Catholicism Is Saianic ”
Knowingly bringing souls closer to Rome is Satanic. Anyone promoting R.C.doctrine, like Packer, are false teachers, for only God can forgive sins, Christ came to save sinners and all believing a priest can do so, will perish. Having a dialog with them is futile. Warning them, like you do Phil, maybe awken simpletons if they heed your exhortations, else no avail.

“ Great Sermon! ”
Thank you so much for making this sermon available. I have been encouraged and strengthen to maintain my stance on not aligning myself with ecumenical teachings. I am presently a part of a planning committee for a national prayer summit for the medical field in Canada. Unbeknown to us, CMDS (Christian Medical and Dental Society) have as their new executive director a professing Catholic. This is new for this organization. Please lift me up in prayer as I am sensing I need to remove myself for this committee as your sermon was able to help clarify for me what "unity" truly looks like. Blessings in Christ, Wanda I would appreciate your not posting this comment on your site.

“ Great Sermon! ”
The Catholic Church changed their method of murder. And that was at our expense. Woohoo

The Vatican broke out the checkbook and opinions changed. Judas Priest, you gotta another thing coming.

“ Great Sermon! ” Excellent! Thank you! What's the short answer how a Roman Catholic was saved before Luther entered the 16th Century theological stage with his "theological novum," Sola Fide? Thank you! (1/14/2012)

“ Popery Is A Novelty. Protestantism Is Apostolic! ”
TIN: Please see "Popery is a Novelty; and the Protestants' Religion Was Not Only Before Luther, But the Same that Was Taught by Christ and His Apostles by Thomas Doolittle" at Also look up Richard Bennett on Sermonaudio. Richard is a former Roman Catholic priest who is now a Protestant preacher, and he answers your question in a number of his messages. For example, "The Early Church & A History of Justification, Faithfulness, Apostasy & Antichrist," at 56389, "The Papal Claim to the Keys of the Apostle Peter," at 56390, and "Biblical Mary and Roman Catholic Tradition" at 56391, would be a good places to start.

“ Salvation Before Luther? ”
Great message!! Thank you. How do we address the Roman Catholic's concern which Pastor and theology scholar, Alister McGrath, expressed that Luther's Sola Fide is a "theological novum"? That is, how was a Roman Catholic saved before Luther entered the 16th Century theological stage with his Sola Fide? Thank you!

“ Strong message ”
Given the essential differences that makes the the Ecumenical union impossible because of major doctrian differences that seem will never be reconciled -- The Word, The Faith are too vast of differences for RC to accept.

“ Very interesting & enlightening ”
Phil is a very articulate and dedicated preacher. He knows the Truth and is not shy about sharing it. I learned a great deal from this message, and it encouraged me to dig deeper into the original reformers' faith and beliefs. You will be blessed by this and you will see clearly why we of the light should have no partnership with darkness.
