Aim: To rejoice that God is sovereign: over the good, and the bad.
Doctrine: By faith we must trust in the progress of sanctification in the individual and glorification in the church. The wisdom of man is foolishness to God. This grace comes not from oneself, but is a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Exegesis: How to reconcile a loving God with a difficult life: be assured that my present sufferings are advancing God's glory (vv. 1-4); do not doubt my justification—Christ shed His blood for it (vv. 5-8); rejoice in my role in Christ—as I am a valuable part of God's program (vv. 9-12).
Further application: ''All things work together for good to those who love God.'' Find joy in Christ's victory over sin in my life.
Key verse: v. 2 ''Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.''
