The context shows that the liberty that Paul exhorts the Galatians to stand in has its basis in justification. This is the only basis for liberty, which means that it is the only starting place for knowing and preserving liberty in ever area of life to get it wrong here is to get it wrong everywhere. Liberty rests upon the truth of justification through faith alone and this has to be vigilantly guarded throughout our Christian life, for we too, like the Galatians, can begin well yet still fall into a trap similar to the one they fell into. Paul is addressing those who said, “Christ has done practically everything and so all we need to do is this little thing or these few things in order to secure our salvation on that final day. But how wrong they were!
