First century believers lived in trying times. The Jewish culture that Christianity emerged from opposed the gospel, considering the message of the cross to be scandalous. Roman culture considered Christians to be foolish and soon idolatrous and then traitorous, because believers refused to worship the emperor. So Christians were marginalized, maligned, and even martyred. Thus came the temptation to back away from their confession of Christ. And for church goers from a Jewish background this was especially true because, for a time, it was simply safer to be a Jew. Hebrews was written to call these church goers to hold fast their confession of Jesus as Lord! Yet some Christians had stagnated in their faith and some were still not genuinely converted at all. The text before us (5:11-6:12) addresses three groups that appear in almost every church: healthy Christians, unhealthy Christians, and unconverted church attenders. This first section focuses on those who confess Christ but are spiritually stalled out. You should be worried if you aren't growing! Something is wrong with you if: i.) you can't hear the truth (v.11); ii.) you can't explain the truth (v.12); iii.) you can't digest the truth (v.13); and you can't apply the truth (v.14). Could this be you?
