God had told them about what beasts of the field, birds of the air that they could eat and the animals of the waters. Now, He declares to them what bugs are clean and unclean. For a bug to be clean, it must have two jointed legs above their feet. In other words, insects that can leap off of the ground. Any flying creature that has four feet are not to be eaten. While they were to regard the carcass of unclean water animals as an abomination, for touching the carcass of the flying creatures, they just become unclean until evening. This is the first time in the Scriptures that the idea of the uncleanness expiring at the end of the day is introduced. If you carry such a creature, you also have to wash your clothes to be clean. All things that walk on paws among those that walk on four feet, shall be unclean until evening. The picture of being unclean until evening is tied to the idea of the second resurrection. When Christ returns, the righteous will be made perfectly clean.
