In Mark 2, Jesus’ popularity is growing and the multitudes are drawn to Him. He has been teaching them in synagogues, in homes, outside of homes, by the seaside, and in the open fields. The world was Jesus classroom, and He is the greatest Teacher of mankind. He is the Rabbi and His disciples were following Him. Many did not like what he was doing. We have seen that the Pharisees, scribes, disciples of John did not like Him eating with sinners and feasting instead of fasting at Levi’s home. They were prepared to continue to challenge Jesus. He was entering into enemy territory and staking claim over hearts and lives. He was ruling in His kingdom as Lord over all. Today, we will see them challenge Jesus concerning the Sabbath. Throughout the gospels, we see this controversy arise. The Sabbath was a symbol of Jewish identity along with the Law and Temple, and the Pharisees had developed certain rules to explain what was acceptable or not acceptable to do on the Sabbath. Let’s consider the topic: Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath. We will look at 1) the Blessing of the Sabbath 2) the Burden of the Sabbath 3) The Blessed God: Giver of Life and Rest
