The preceding chapters of Revelation presented so much darkness—judgments, beasts, idolatry, oppression—it’s as if it was apparent that there needed to be a chapter with some light. Revelation 14 portrays some of that light by looking ahead to the time of Christ’s return. As an interlude between series of judgments this chapter anticipates what will become the reality in later chapters. For now we receive a glimpse into that glorious future when the Lamb stands among His faithful followers on Mount Zion, poised to establish His kingdom on earth. Specifically, Revelation 14:1-5 describes the 144,000 faithful, persecution-tried witnesses who will stand firm for Jesus Christ during the last three and a half years prior to the Second Coming. Their example reminds us that standing firm for Jesus, the Lamb who is Lord, is the best and only sensible way to live the Christian life.
