King David surrounded himself with brave and strong men, men of war and great exploits. They were necessary to secure the kingdom and protect the King's interests.
The Scriptures do not record many instances of gentleness or kindness to the helpless by David. He lived and ruled in a hard time.
But in his treatment of Mephibosheth is the great exception. He took that poor, helpless, lame man into his palace and exalted him to eat at the King's table.
This was a most notable thing, since Mephibosheth was the grandson of King Saul, David's rival and persecutor. By all rights, Mephibosheth should have been swept up in the great purge that always took place when one king deposed the house of another. Mephibosheth was a threat to David, because he could always raise a claim to the throne and divide the people's loyalty to David.
The Scriptures give David's reason for kindness to Mephibosheth: an oath he made with Jonathan, Mephibosheth's father.
That oath resulted from David's intense friendship with Jonathan. Jonathan was the natural heir to Saul's throne, but he and David were the best of friends. Jonathan interceded for David with Saul, and tried to assuage Saul's misplaced animosity to David, but to no avail. Jonathan knew David would be king one day and not him, and he bound him with an oath of friendship to do his offspring kindness.
In Mephibosheth's relation to David lies a picture of the Saint's dealings with Christ. For we are all lame, and of no use to Him, yea, at enmity against Him - but He loves us and takes us unto Himself!
Indeed, He invites us to the King's table, and feeds us rich food - salvation by His Blood!
