In this doctrinal section of Galatians (3-4), the Apostle Paul has appealed to the experience of the Galatians (1-5), the justification by faith of Abraham (6-9- “promise, grace, faith”), the impossibility of salvation by law keeping (10-14- “law, commandments, works” ), and today, we look at the priority of the promises of God (15-25). The Judaizers wanted to place emphasis on the law of Moses, but Paul will point out today that the promises made to Abraham are superior based on the Promise Maker and Keeper. The promise to Abraham (approx.. 2000 BC) came before the law was given to Moses (approx. 1440 BC). The promise revealed the gospel of grace through the Seed of Abraham. The law served as a prison house or tutor which revealed our sinfulness and pointed us to the Master- Teacher—Jesus Christ. Salvation has always been by grace (God said, “I will”) through faith and could never come through the works of the law (thou shalt, thou shalt not).
