In James 3:1-12 we are shown two uses - one positive and one negative - for our tongue. In part one of this presentation (James 3:1-5a) we see the positive use - that we use our tiny yet powerful tongue to make great proclamations. Two principles communicated here are: 1) Those who use their tongue much (as in teaching) will face stricter judgment, and 2) Those who bridle their tongue well will grow in maturity and better fight sin. Two metaphors used in this section are: 1) As a rider uses a tiny bit to control the entire horse, so ew use our tiny tongue to control our entire body, and 2) As a pilot controls a large ship through his control of a small rudder, so a person controls their entire body through the control of their small tongue.
