Today, we will turn our attention to the book of Matthew and take our reading from the beginning of the book in verse 1-17. Matthew’s gospel opens up with the royal genealogy of Jesus and presents Jesus as the Promised King. Mark’s gospel does not have a genealogy because it is written to reveal Jesus Christ as the Suffering Servant. A servant’s genealogy is not all that important in regards to lineage. Luke’s gospel reveals Jesus as the Son of Man and connects Jesus genealogy of going back to Adam, although He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and did not inherit Adam’s original sin. John’s gospel is concerned with revealing Jesus as the Son of God. The goal of the book of Matthew was to present Jesus to the Jews as their Promised King.
